Africa - Marc Allégret
In July 1925, Marc Allégret accompanied his spiritual father, friend and lover André Gide on a journey through Equatorial French Africa and the Belgian Congo. He made nearly 2000 glass negatives over a ten month period, photographing Cameroon, the Congo, Chad, and the Central African Republic. Unlike early travel photography of the 19th and early 20th century, Allégret captured images of the everyday activities of the local people, their clothing and their homes, without attempting to classify things and people.
In fact Gide's work recounting this journey was one of the first published works to criticise the colonial regime.
The following year, in 1927, Marc Allégret made his first film "Voyage au Congo", a 90-minute documentary. Thus began his career as a director, during which he helped many people such as Michèle Morgan, Gérard Philipe and Simone Simon to become famous.
