Burgundy, land of history
Burgundy, land of history
Its position as a crossroads has given Burgundy a remarkable historical heritage. From Bibracte to Alesia and Autun, the signs of Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul are everywhere. The Middle Ages and the Renaissance saw the building of many châteaux and abbeys in the region. Later, the House of the Ducs de Valois reached the pinnacle of its influence with the Duchy of Burgundy and the Palais des Ducs et des Etats de Bourgogne (Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Burgundy) in Dijon. Burgundy also has a rich economic history, rooted in farming and in industry with its iron foundries and coal mines.
