Circus world's paintings
Painters have frequently been associated with the circus world, to the point where it became a central source of inspiration in the History of Art.
The circus came into fashion in France in the 18th century and it was the English who gave the first performances, presenting horse riding stunts, pantomimes, and amazing feats of strength and flexibility that were both serious and comic.
Ever since the 19th century, artists such as Picasso, Calder, Seurat, Chagall, Léger and many others have been fascinated by this special world which they made into a theme of modernity. Clowns, circus riders and acrobats often became symbols of the artist's condition, and particularly of all those who rejected the dry academia of the Académie des Beaux Arts.
