The Musée d'Orsay (Orsay Museum) Medal Collection
The Musée d'Orsay (Orsay Museum) Medal Collection

A little-known collection at the Musée d'Orsay (Orsay Museum) is the medal collection, consisting of around 2,500 items. Far from being confined to the standardised formula of religious medals or everyday coins, the plaques and medals provide an extraordinarily rich and multifaceted vision of 19th century society. They record all aspects of public and private life, both minor and major historical events: private anniversaries, scientific inventions and international politics. From prisons to hospitals, from chambers of commerce to the demoulding of the pneumatic tyre, from the French Alpine Club to airships, they parade in front of us, like a kaleidoscope of history.
