Centennial of Marguerite Duras' birth
Centennial of Marguerite Duras' birth
A somewhat controversial novelist of the latter half of the 20th century, Marguerite Duras was born on 4 April 1914. She revived the literary genre of the modern novel and defied conventions, revolutionizing the theatre and cinema. Her work is based both on places that had marked her life - the Indochina of her childhood, Calcutta, Hiroshima or Normandy - and recurring themes like love, memory, oblivion, the sea, illness and people or performers, an inventive form of writing where fiction fuses with reality.
