Marseille, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisation (MuCEM)
In June 2013, the first museum devoted to European and Mediterranean civilisations opened its doors on
the historical site of the Fort Saint-Jean in Marseilles. The MuCEM pays tribute to all the civilisations of the
Mediterranean, with the bulk of its collections coming from the National Museum of Art and Popular Traditions
in Paris, founded in 1937 by Georges Henri Rivière and now closed. Spanning Europe and the Mediterranean
from Neolithic times to the present day, the collections have grown through significant acquisitions over
the course of ten years, along with works that have been loaned by numerous museums around the
Mediterranean.
