The British Museum is one of the oldest museums in Europe. A generous donation from Sir Hans Sloane
allowed the museum to be created in 1753 and opened to the public in 1759. Two hundred fifty years later, the
museum draws thousands of visitors each year from around the world, who come to admire the diversity of its
collections. Today the museum houses approximately 6 million items from antiquity to modern day, including
the famous Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon frieze, the bust of Pericles and even Charles v’s mechanical galleon.
