Senatorial elections
The next three-yearly renewal of the Senate will take place on 21 September 2008: 114 seats are to be filled of which 12 are new. Together with the National Assembly, the Senate makes up Parliament, i.e. Legislative power, whose role is to propose, discuss and pass Laws. Unlike the National Assembly, the Senate cannot be dissolved by the President of the Republic. Senators, eligible for election from the age of 30, are chosen by an electoral college for a term of office of 6 years. Elections are held every three years to renew half of the Senate.
