André Le Nôtre
André Le Nôtre

Landscape gardener to Louis XIV from 1645 to 1700, he was most notably commissioned to design the layout of the park and gardens at the Château de Versailles, as well as those at Vaux-le-Vicomte and Chantilly. Celebrating the triumph of order over disorder, of cultivation over nature, of reason over spontaneity, the classic French garden reached its pinnacle in the 17th century with the creation of the gardens at Versailles, which were later copied by all the royal courts of Europe.
