The Measurement of Time
From the dawn of civilisation, man has turned his attention to calculating the passage of time, initially relying on the daily movement of shadows, the changing of the seasons or the lunar cycle. The earliest known measuring instruments were gnomons, clepsydra or water clocks, and sundials, but over the centuries, man's fascination with physical phenomena drove him to develop increasingly accurate devices for measuring time, not least the use of pendulums in mechanical clocks. Now we can tell the time any time and anywhere.
