The Angel of the Odd. Dark Romanticism from Goya to Max Ernst
The Angel of the Odd. Dark Romanticism from Goya to Max Ernst

Exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay from 5 March to 9 June 2013

With this exhibition, the Musée d’Orsay allows visitors to discover the many different expressions of Dark Romanticism, from works by Goya and Füssli to Max Ernst and Expressionist films of the 1920s, through a selection of 200 works that includes paintings, graphic art, sculpture and films. The term "dark romanticism", coined by the literary critic and art historian, Mario Paz, describes a vast swathe of literature and the plastic arts, which from the 1760s onwards exploited the shadows, excesses and irrational elements lurking beneath the apparent triumph of enlightened Reason.
