Sepik, The Art of Papua New Guinea
Sepik, The Art of Papua New Guinea

The exhibition held at the Musée du quai Branly from 27 October 2015 to 31 January 2016 is the first on this theme and brings together a collection of 230 sculptures from the valley of the Sepik River. What is life like on the banks of the Sepik River?
Centred around the theme of its founding ancestors, the exhibition takes us on an extraordinary journey through a traditional village, with separate areas for women, men and the initiated, which are all controlled by a tribe.
Ancestral masks, filled with magical powers, are used during rituals and take on various human or animal forms, while the giant drums and water drums resonate in the background.
These impressive, magnificent and strange objects – carved wooden hooks, drums, finials, feather panels, friezes painted on bark, weapons and shell ornaments – reveal the cultural richness and mythical universe of the Papua New Guinea tribes living on the banks of the great Sepik River.
Let's hope the spirits and ancestors of these peoples can protect their fragile world today.
