Johannes Gutenberg (circa 1400-1468)
Johannes Gutenberg (circa 1400-1468)

Born in Mainz around1400, Johannes Gutenberg, or Gutemberg, was a goldsmith and is often credited with inventing the printing press (the process was in fact already established in China). While in Strasbourg, he developed an alloy of three metals and used this to create moveable type that could resist the press.
In 1452, Gutenberg started printing a 1284-page bible with the financial backing of banker Johann Fust. Gutenberg selected St Jerome’s Latin translation of the Bible and presented it in the same way as a manuscript version, with the text set out in two columns each comprising 42 lines. This first printed version remains famous to this day and is known as the “Gutenberg Bible” or “42-line Bible”.
The invention of the printing press ushered in a cultural revolution: books used to be expensive because they were written by hand, but could now be printed in many copies, which led to the widespread dissemination of ideas and knowledge.
