Picturesque and romantic journeys in old France

“Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l’ancienne France” is a monumental work edited by Isidore Taylor, known as Baron Taylor, with the cooperation of numerous writers including Charles Nodier and Alphonse de Cailleux, as well as of a large number of artists, engravers and lithographers. The work was published between 1820 and 1878, and constitutes the first collection of France’s artistic heritage. Taylor called on artists such as Viollet-le-Duc to illustrate these journeys.
The volumes contain text surrounded by frames and vignettes, and series of plates in the form of lithograph prints. The lithographs in each volume represent key civil, military and religious monuments as well as landscapes and scenes from everyday life in France at that time. This monumental work constitutes a valuable record of the status of France's architectural heritage during the first half of the 19th century.
