Holidays

In the 19th century, holidays were the reserve of the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Holiday pay, introduced in France in 1936, gave all French people the opportunity to continue to have their salary paid while taking a week's rest. With the improvements in transport and the arrival of cheaper models on the car market, holiday-makers took to the road to head for the tourist spots. The beach remains the image that best represents and illustrates the holidays during the two months of summer.
