Fortified castles
Fortified castles

In the 9th century, the Edict of Pistres encouraged the construction of fortresses to tackle the Scandinavian invasions that were threatening the West Frankish Kingdom.
For several centuries, fortified castles served both as the residence of the lord and his family and as symbol of feudal power. The construction of fortified castles began in the 9th century as a means to confront the perils of the time and peaked in the 12th century. Raids by the Vikings and the Saracens, as well as the violence of the brigands which threatened the peasants and their harvests, were the deciding factors behind the building of these fortified abodes.
