A new acquisition for the Musée National Marc Chagall
A new acquisition for the Musée National Marc Chagall

During the sale of part of the Hebey collection at the Drouot auction house, the Piscine-Musée d'art et d'industrie de Roubaix [Swimming Pool-Museum of Art and Industry of Roubaix] pre-empted the 1944 oil on canvas painting, "La Route de Cranberry Lake", for the Musée National Marc Chagall in Nice.
In 1941, Chagall, who had become a French citizen in 1937, was arrested. After he was released, he travelled to the United States and did not return to France until 1948.
Marc and Bella Chagall arrived at the Port of New York on 23 June 1941.
During his exile in the United States, Chagall worked continuously, producing paintings, engravings and illustrated books, designing ballet sets and costumes, etc. Several exhibitions were organised to display his work (Galerie Pierre Matisse, Moma, Chicago Art Institute) and were very successful.
Marc Chagall and his wife spent the summer of 1944 at Cranberry Lake, in the north of New York State, where the artist mainly painted village scenes. The couple planned to return to New York City at the start of September 1944. However, a few days before they were due to leave, Bella became seriously ill and died on 2 September 1944. After her death, Marc Chagall did not work for many months.
This painting bought by the Musée National Marc Chagall in Nice was painted during this trip.
