40th anniversary of the Musée National Marc Chagall
40th anniversary of the Musée National Marc Chagall

1973-2013: This year the Musée National Marc Chagall celebrates its 40th anniversary. It was in 1973 that the first museum devoted to the work of a living artist opened in Nice. It contains a series of gouache paintings and numerous other works donated to the French State by Marc and Valentina Chagall. All these works are about the Bible, a subject the artist devoted much of his work to, and which was to be the theme of this new museum. Over time, the collection was enriched by works inspired by other themes. Amongst Chagall's recurrent themes self-portraits have a prominent place. In the summer of 2013 they will be the subject of a major exhibition "Before the mirror, self-portraits, couples and appearances", revealing the amazing scope of this topic. Other exhibitions include the one devoted to books illustrated by the artist, "Chagall and the book", which was launched on 20 October 2012 and is due to end on 11 February 2013. In spring 2013, another exhibition entitled, "From one war to another", which will be held in parallel with the major Chagall exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg, will display certain aspects of the artist's work produced between the two world wars.
